The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Conservative Party Leader
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6
Dear Mr. Sheer,
Re: Your Meeting with Toronto Mayor John Tory on Friday, 23 March 2018
I note with pleasure the significant efforts that you and the Conservative Party Members of Parliament have been making in your ongoing attempts to hold our globe-trotting Prime Minister and the Liberals to account for their poorly conceived policies. For that you are to be highly commended.
I am, however, very concerned with the discussion that you had with Toronto Mayor John Tory on Friday, 23 March 2018. In that discussion where Mr. Tory was pushing the Liberals "to impose controls beyond new proposals," you stated:
“We've always been on the side of robust licensing ... ."(1)
That statement flies in the face of the Conservative Party Policy. Responsible firearms owners all across Canada have been working diligently for over twenty-four years to ensure that:
A Conservative Government will repeal Canada's costly gun registry legislation and work with the provinces and territories on cost-effective gun control programs designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals while respecting the rights of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly.(2)
The type of gun ownership licencing that the Liberals forced upon responsible gun owners with the Firearms Act of 1995 cannot be allowed to stand.(3) That unjust law leads relentlessly down the path to the destruction of our Right of armed self-defence.(4)
I humbly ask that you consult with responsible firearms owners and seek a path that will repeal that unjust law.

1. Federal PC Leader Andrew Scheer and Mayor John Tory talk gun control in first formal meeting
“We've always been on the side of robust licensing so this is an interesting proposal we'll take back and see how it looks,” said the Saskatchewan MP who won the Conservative leadership last year.
2. Conservative Party Of Canada Policy on Firearms
A Conservative Government will repeal Canada's costly gun registry legislation and work with the provinces and territories on cost-effective gun control programs designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals while respecting the rights of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly. Measures will include: mandatory minimum sentences for the criminal use of firearms; strict monitoring of high-risk individuals; crackdown on the smuggling; safe storage provisions; firearms safety training; a certification screening system for all those wishing to acquire firearms legally; and putting more law enforcement officers on our streets.
3. The Firearms Act, chapter 39, Statutes of Canada -1995;
The Governor in Council may make regulations
(a) regarding the issuance of licenses, ... and prescribing the circumstances in which persons are or are not eligible to hold licences; ...
(c) prescribing the circumstances in which an individual does or does not need firearms
(1) to protect the life of that individual, ... .

Licencing means that Ottawa can increasingly tighten up the rules until only a few of us are left. At that point, we’ll be just a small band of elite shooters. We will be in the same situation as firearm owners in the UK: just a small, elite group with no political power and a “politically incorrect” hobby. The lessons are there before our eyes in Europe. Just by arbitrarily tightening up the standards, the government can cause gun ownership to disappear.
