Mr. Garry Breitkreuz,
Dear Mr. Breitkreuz,
Re: The Conservative Government’s Position vis-à-vis Licencing
I am requesting your assistance in clarifying the very important issue of your position vis-à-vis the mandatory licensing of responsible firearms owners while you served as the Opposition Firearms Critic. A very vital confusion seems to exist between my understanding of your position and several members of the Conservative Caucus.
On 12 August 2009 I had the opportunity to speak with the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, at a reception in Saskatoon. During our conversation regarding the responsible ownership of firearms I told the Minister that I was severely disappointed that Mr. Harper had betrayed firearms owners by endorsing licensing. To that Mr. Strahl replied, “the Conservative never said that we would repeal licencing.” When I informed Ministry Strahl that you as the Conservative’s Firearms Critic had publically promised that the Conservatives would repeal the “entire Firearms Act”, Mr. Strahl seemed perplexed.
I then told Mr. Strahl that I would clarify this situation by seeking your confirmation of my statement, and then I would forward your reply to him.
In light of all the Conservatives’ recent talk of “scrapping the Gun Registry” – with not a single word mentioned at all from anyone in Government of licencing - I can see how a busy minister might become confused. Therefore I would appreciate your confirmation of the Conservatives’ commitment while you served as the Conservatives’ Firearms Critic to the repeal of the entire Firearms Act. You may recall that at the Saskatoon Wildlife Federation rally in December 2005 you replied in the affirmative when I requested you to emphasize that the Conservatives’ promise specifically included the elimination of licensing.
I would greatly appreciate your clear, unambiguous restatement of the Conservatives’ commitment while in Opposition to eliminate the entire Firearms Act. This clarification would be of benefit to me as I talk with your fellow Conservative Members of Parliament, especially busy ministers and some of the newly elected members who did not work with you while in Opposition.
CC: The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development
