His Excellency The Right Honourable David Johnston
Governor General of Canada
Rideau Hall, 1 Sussex Drive

Mr. Harper’s Government succeeded in passing Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act through third reading in Parliament this week. If the Senate should also be so unwise as to pass this totally inadequate Bill, I implore you to withhold your Royal Assent.

Mr. Harper loudly proclaims that Bill C-19 fulfills his and his Party’s promise to responsible Canadian firearms owners. Nothing could be further from the truth. As I have presented in the enclosed notes with this letter, Mr. Harper, the Conservative Party of Canada, and Mr. Harper’s Firearms Critic all promised firearms owners that a Conservative Government would respect the “Right of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly.”

While deleting the registration of long-guns, regrettably Bill C-19 maintains the very worst part of the Liberals’ 1995 Firearms Act, licencing. Licencing attempts of destroy our Canadian heritage of responsible firearms ownership. Disingenuously licencing mandates that honest, responsible Canadians ask the government for permission to obtain the means to protect themselves.

We worked tirelessly for over seventeen years to elect a Government that respects us. Now, like Jean Chrétien and the Liberals before them, Mr. Harper and the Conservatives are treating voters with contempt. If citizens cannot trust their elected Government to keep their promises why should we trust them with our lives?

Rather than trying in vain to licence every honest, responsible citizen of Canada who merely owns a firearm, we believe that it makes more sense, and would be far more cost efficient and effective, to make a list of those people in Canada who are obviously too dangerous to possess a firearm. A Firearms Prohibition Registry2 of criminals would make Canadians safer than a list of licenced gun owners.

Please to not permit this misbegotten Bill C-19 to become law.

Edward B. Hudson DVM, MS
