Firearms Owners Association
Wednesday, 14 December 2011
The Honourable Raynell Andreychuk
Dear Senator Andreychuk,
In 1995 Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien rammed the Firearms Act down the throats of honest, responsible firearms owners with Justice Minister Allan Rock’s words:
In determined response, responsible firearms owners all across Canada worked tirelessly for the past sixteen years to elect a majority Conservative Government to ensure that the Liberals’ vain ideology could not destroy our proud Canadian culture and heritage of responsible firearms ownership.
Now Prime Minister Harper will soon send to the Senate Bill C-19, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act.
Yet these changes to the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act will only affect the registration of firearms. Inexplicably, Mr. Harper’s Bill does not address the most pernicious part of the Firearms Act. Somewhere during that protracted struggle Mr. Harper has forgotten that it is the licencing mandate of the Liberals’ Firearms Act that makes the mere possession of a firearm illegal.
Senator Andreychuk, as long as the licencing mandate of the Firearms Act remains the Government can use this unjust law to confiscate our private property without criminal charge, trial, or conviction.
I beseech you and your fellow Conservative Senate colleagues to amend Bill C-19 to decriminalize the ownership of firearms.
