A very huge step on the way to Insanity

Paul Rogan, owner of Canadian Access to Firearms, has praised Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s introduction of Bill C-19, An Act Ending the Long-gun Registry, as “a very small step on the way to sanity”. Mr. Rogan concludes that we should “enjoy this small but positive development.”1

As much as I respect Mr. Rogan’s faithful service to firearms owners and his opinion, on this issue I believe Paul’s faith in Mr. Harper is entirely misplaced. I would no longer trust Mr. Harper around the block with my dog, much less with my firearms, safety, and security.

Ever since Mr. Harper refused to appoint Garry Breitkreuz, his former Firearms Critic, to any position of responsibility with firearms in his newly elected Government in January 2006, Mr. Harper has been in full retreat from his promise to repeal all of Bill C-68, the Liberals’ 1995 Firearms Act.2

Mr. Harper’s betrayal of responsible firearms owners became even more clear in May 2006 when Auditor General Sheila Fraser released her damning Report on the Firearms Act. Mr. Harper’s muted response was merely an offer of an “amnesty” to allow firearms owners “time to comply” and obtain a licence to possess their firearms.

After that date, Mr. Harper subtly replaced “Repeal Bill C-68” with “Scrap the Registry”, which then morphed into simply “end the long-gun registry”.

Yes, Mr. Harper can correctly claim to have met his 2011 campaign promise. But what Mr. Harper cannot claim is to have met his commitment to fulfill the Conservative Party Policy to respect “the Rights of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly.”3

Mr. Harper now has his ministers informing us that the Conservatives endorse the Liberals’ licensing scheme. In a letter dated 07 September 2011, Mr. Harper’s Minister of Justice the Honourable Rob Nicholson confirms Mr. Harper’s blatant treachery:

The Government of Canada supports the current licensing scheme, which limits lawful possession of firearms … .4

Sadly and regrettably, I do not see Bill C-19 as “a very small step on the way to sanity”. Rather I see Bill C-19 as a very huge step towards Conservative insanity.

Sincerely,

Edward B. Hudson DVM, MS
Secretary
