Property Rights
News from the Saskatchewan Party Convention 2012

At the annual Saskatchewan Party Convention this past weekend in Saskatoon, delegates were scheduled to consider a resolution that would have effectively gutted the current Saskatchewan Party Policy on Private Property.

The current Saskatchewan Party Policy JS10-1 adopted by the membership in Convention in Regina in March 2010 declares:

“A Saskatchewan Party Government shall amend the current Saskatchewan Human Rights Code to enshrine the individual’s Right to own property.”

Some concern had been expressed that the potential effect of this Policy was unclear and further clarification was needed.

The proposed resolution called for the Property Rights Policy to be amended to read:

“A Saskatchewan Party Government, when enacting legislation, shall consider its effect on an individual's right to own property and shall ensure that any limits on the right to own property are justifiable.”

After a hectic ten days of consultation, the constituency that proposed the resolution agreed to table the resolution with a recommendation that:

“A committee composed of Ed Hudson, Joe Gingrich, Lorne Mysko, Mark Vanstone, Brad Hunter, and Peter Voldeng be appointed to review current legislation and make recommendations to better protect property rights in our province.”

The delegates overwhelmingly approved this tabling recommendation.

This effectively put us back to where we were two years ago, but all players now seem to be onside and willing to work “to enshrine the individual’s Right to own property” in effective provincial legislation.

Our committee’s work to accomplish that task will begin shortly.

We welcome suggestions, comments, and encouragement.
