Rod Wiebe, President, BC Wildlife Federation
Dear Mr. Wiebe,
I greatly appreciate your letter of 14 January 2012 to the Prime Minister regarding Bill C-19. Regrettably far too many responsible firearms owners do not seem to comprehend the insidious, destructive nature of licencing and that “even after the long-gun registry is scrapped, gun owners will still be treated as criminals.” Therefore, I was very encouraged also to note that your members expect Mr. Harper “to ensure that Bill C-19 is not the last step in reforming Canada’s irrational gun laws.”
Canada has a proud history and culture of positive firearms ownership. The Government of Canadian must recognize our Right to property and the Right of responsible Canadian citizens to possess, own, and use our firearms. Unless Mr. Harper and his Conservative Government enact laws that genuinely and correctly adhere to the CPC Policy to respect the “Right of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly”, they are no different than Jean Chrétein’s Liberals.
Because we are now in a “normal” four-year election cycle, we believe it is essential for Mr. Harper to introduce legislation repealing all of the Firearms Act and its supporting Criminal Code provisions not later than their Convention June 2013. We have no intention to sit idly by and listen to hollow elections promises for another three years.
To replace licencing, CUFOA has proposed a Firearms Prohibition Registry (FPR). I have enclosed a handout demonstrating the method and advantages of the FPR. Whether Canada adopts the FPR, a USA-style ‘instant background check’, or the 1977 Bill C-51 style FAC, we can do immensely better than being required to pass a course merely to possess our property.
We look forward to working synergistically with the B.C. Wildlife Federation to effect these changes now while we have the opportunity.
