Dear Mr. Breitkreuz,

Re: the Right of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly

I want to thank you again for your strong, active participation in support of firearms owners at the 2013 Conservative Party Convention in Calgary.

With your personal support, the membership by a nearly unanimous vote in the plenary session modified the Conservative Firearms Policy by adding a new clause:

"A Conservative Government recognizes the legitimacy of private ownership of firearms and will resist any domestic or international pressure to the contrary."(1)

This is an extremely significant, positive modification. Your strong, public stand in support of this motion was extremely timely.

However not all Conservative delegates seem to understand the Conservative firearms policy. As CBC reporter Kay O'Mally noted, one lone speaker stated that he believes gun ownership "is a privilege, not a right." (2)

One misinformed delegate is statistically totally insignificant. But regrettably that "lone speaker" could very easily have been Mr. Harper.

In the over six and one-half years that Mr. Harper has been Prime Minister, Mr. Harper has not recognized our Right to own firearms. Even after two full years with "a strong, stable Conservative majority Government," Mr. Harper has not honoured the 2005 Conservative policy to respect "the Right of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly."(3). Nor has Mr. Harper keep his promise to firearms owners to repeal Bill C-68 - the Firearms Act and its attendant changes to the Criminal Code that make the mere possession of a firearm illegal.(3) And Mr. Harper has completely negated your promise to firearms owners to eliminate the Liberals' gun control laws.(3)

Mr. Breitkreuz, you have our heartfelt admiration and support. In this fight to protect our Rights you have been a shinning beacon of strength and determination. But we must finish the fight.

Please tell Mr. Harper to honour his promise to firearms owners. Please tell Mr. Harper to implement the Conservative Firearms Policy. Mr. Harper must enact legislation that repeals all of the firearms legislation that the Liberals' rammed through in 1995. Mr. Harper must respect our Right to own and use firearms responsibly.

For Mr. Harper to do anything less is a betrayal of all of us and everything we have worked so hard to accomplish together.

Sincerely,

Edward B. Hudson DVM, MS
Secretary
