Kelly Block, MP, Chair, CPC Saskatchewan Caucus
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6

Dear Ms. Block,

On Wednesday, 01 February 2012, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported that your Conservative Party of Canada colleague from Saskatchewan Brad Trost suggests that “MPs and Mr. Harper need to re-evaluate their roles.” I genuinely trust that you and all your Saskatchewan colleagues will vigorously support Mr. Trost’s attempt to have the Conservatives MPs “do better” and actually represent “the Conservative position.”1

An extremely significant case in point: Mr. Harper is loudly praising his introduction of Bill C-19 as fulfilling the Conservatives’ commitment to firearm owners. Technically, Bill C-19 may indeed meet Mr. Harper’s 2011 election promise, but as I hope you fully understand by now this totally inadequate Bill “to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act” does nothing to fulfill the Conservative Party Platform promise to respect “the Rights of law-abiding Canadians to own and use firearms responsibly.”2

Please note: Bill C-19 does absolutely nothing to repeal the licencing mandate of the Firearms Act. In defiance of logic Bill C-19 leaves the criminalization of the mere possession of a firearm deeply ensconced in the Criminal Code of Canada.

For over sixteen years your Saskatchewan colleague Garry Breitkreuz served as the Firearms Critic, first for the Reform Party, then the Canadian Alliance, and ultimately, for the Conservative Party. Through all these various incorporations of conservative values, Mr. Breitkreuz assured firearms owners that if we remained true to our conservative beliefs that a Conservative Government would repeal all of the Liberals’ despicable Firearms Act.

Rather than licencing all the responsible gun owners in Canada, a simple Firearms Prohibition Registry 3 of violent, dangerous criminals would make Canadians safer. Therefore I call upon you and your Conservatives colleagues to repeal the Liberals’ Firearms Act and decriminalize the responsible ownership of our private property.
